How to automatically reply to Instagram DMs

What Instagram actually allows, what you need before you start, and how automatic replies work inside the 24-hour messaging window — including the rules most guides leave out.

What Instagram lets you automate

Instagram allows automated replies to direct messages through the Instagram Messaging API, which Meta provides for professional accounts. This is the supported route: an app you connect receives your messages and can reply on your behalf.

It is not the same as a tool that logs into your account with your password and types for you. Those violate Meta's terms and are the reason accounts get restricted. A legitimate tool asks you to authorise it through Meta and never sees your password.

What you need before you start

Converting a personal account to a professional one takes a minute in the Instagram app and does not change your handle, your posts or your followers.

  • An Instagram professional account — Business or Creator. Personal accounts cannot use the messaging API.
  • A Facebook Page connected to that Instagram account. Meta requires the link even if you never post to the Page.
  • Access to the Instagram account from a device you can authorise on.

The 24-hour rule, which decides everything

Instagram gives you a 24-hour window to reply after a customer messages you. Inside that window, your automation can send freely. Once 24 hours pass without a new message from them, you cannot message that person again through the API.

WhatsApp has a paid template system for reopening a conversation after its window closes. Instagram has no equivalent. When the window shuts, it is shut until the customer writes again.

This is the single most important constraint to design around, and most guides skip it. It means a bot that replies quickly is not a nice-to-have — a reply that arrives after the window has closed cannot be delivered at all.

What a reply actually needs to know

The hard part of automating DMs is not sending a message. It is not being wrong.

A customer asking "is the black one still available in medium?" is asking about a specific item, in a specific variant, right now. An automation that answers from a script will eventually confirm an order for something you sold last week. That is worse for the business than not replying, because the customer is now expecting a parcel.

So the useful question about any tool is not whether it replies, but where its answer comes from. If it cannot read your live stock, its confidence is decoration.

Knowing when to stop

Every automation should have a boundary it will not cross. A complaint, a refund request, an angry message, or a question nobody anticipated should reach a person rather than be absorbed by a script that keeps replying cheerfully.

A tool that hands a conversation over is not admitting defeat. It is the difference between an assistant and an answering machine.

How GhostAgent does it

GhostAgent connects through the Instagram Messaging API — you authorise it through Meta and it never asks for your password.

Before answering a question about price, availability or an existing order, it queries your own records rather than generating an answer. If a product is out of stock, it says so; if an order is still pending, it says that instead of reassuring you.

It hands the conversation to you when a customer asks for a person, when it detects frustration, when an order has been sitting unfulfilled, or when it has said it will check something — because a request-and-reply system cannot send that second message on its own, and a promise nobody hears is worse than no promise.

Common questions

Can I automate Instagram DMs without breaking the rules?
Yes, through the Instagram Messaging API on a professional account. What is against Meta's terms is a tool that logs in with your password and operates the app as if it were you — that is what gets accounts restricted.
Do I need a Facebook Page?
Yes. Meta requires an Instagram professional account to be linked to a Facebook Page before it can use the messaging API, even if you never post to the Page.
What is the Instagram 24-hour messaging window?
After a customer messages you, you have 24 hours to reply through the API. Once that passes with no new message from them, you cannot message that person again until they write to you. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram has no paid template to reopen a closed window.
Will an automation reply to comments as well as DMs?
Comments and direct messages are separate permissions in Meta's API, so a tool has to support each one explicitly. Check which of the two you are actually buying.
